My Unfinished Game

Submitted by doughnut on November 29, 2006 - 11:18pm.

This story takes place back in the WakeOver days again - that's one story I should take the time to write up.

Once again, I'm not sure what year this actually took place in. But it was quite possibly 1995 as I had not yet acquired my PowerBook 190cs, and I know for sure that it was on or around my birthday. Like usual for my birthday, it fell during school holidays so once again Adam, Luke and I organised another WakeOver to be held at my place. Much fun was had, a lot of Pepsi was drunk and many network games were played.

I'm not sure who gave me the present, but it was certainly appreciated. After all, we'd been playing the same games for a few days straight so a change was welcomed.

The game I received was a little known title called Entomorph. Never heard of it? Told you it was little known.

Entomorph was an adventure game with basic RPG bits and attempts to be non-linear. Based in a fantasy type world where some of the inhabitants are turning into bugs - does the title make sense now?

After installing the game on my LC 475, I can remember taking turns playing this game with Luke and Adam until 4-5 AM that morning. It was fun, and we were progressing quite well through it. Two things that will make you forget how tired you are and continue on well into the night. Until we hit a problem. The game had a bug (pun intended).

We got to a point in the game where it would always crash. No matter what we had done up to that point, or at what difficulty level we had played at. I think we played through to that point twice that first night, and during the weeks after I tried a few times on my own, But nothing could be done to get past this crashing point.

I've played many, many video games through out my years. Some more memorable than others. I don't always finish a game straight away because I'll often get sick of it or get distracted by something shiny. But I think the reason that Entomorph has stuck in my mind for so long is because I simply wasn't able to finish the game - and not for my own lack of trying.

it's something I wouldn't mind trying to play through again, possibly the Windows version through an emulator. Hopefully it didn't suffer from the same problem that the Mac version had.

The search for abandon-ware begins, I guess...

• Game Info at Moby Games.

• Moby Games also has some screenshots.

• A walkthrough.

• Apparently this site has the game available for download, but for $4.95, I'd rather find it for free.

• The GameFAQs page on Entomorph

• An in-depth review.

Yeah, they're pretty weak by today's standard. And they're 640x480 too! Hehe

Still, it's not always about the quality of the graphics. A fun game is really just the playabilty and the story.

Myst was the graphical adventure/puzzle solving game from back in 1993. One of the first games to come on a CD, and a big reason for CD-ROM's taking off.

Myth was the third person-esque real time strategy game created by Bungie. You controlled limited forces of an army and positioned them offensively or defensively to complete missions.

I think I'll have to work on a "My Myth Days..." story now.
