My First mac

Submitted by doughnut on May 14, 2006 - 9:53pm.

This isn't titled "My First Computer" as that would be a Commodore 64. But that was used as a game console, pretty much. Cartridges and tapes, woo! Of course, that's another story.

The Macintosh LC 475, 68LC040 25MHz, 4MB of RAM and a 160MB HD with a 640x480 14" monitor - this was my first Mac and my introduction into computers.

It's obviously not much now, but back in 1994-95 when I got it... It wasn't top of the line then either. But I had no clue what I was doing so it did me fine at the time and for many years. From school work, to games. Many games.

To those that say Mac's don't have any games, well... They're partially right. While I didn't have many games that others grew up on, I can recall many that I wasted many hours on. And chances are, Mac users around my age or older will know them too. Classic games like Spectre, Taskmaker (and it's sequel Tomb of the Taskmaker), Realmz, Aperion, BOOM, Bubble Trouble, Escape Velocity, Abuse... I could go on, but it would be foolish to try and list all the games I enjoyed over the years.

A game that I completely enjoyed was Hellcats Over The Pacific. This game sparked my interest in flight sims for a long time. Later on, I had great fun with F/A-18 Hornet 2.0 and later A-10 Attack! and it's add on A-10 Cuba. I really used to love flight sims, and would spend hours completing many missions in a row. Awhile ago I tried out a later version of F/A-18 Hornet, but without a joystick it's just not fun, and I never bothered to get another joystick.

Another game that stuck with me all these years was Marathon.

I discovered the demo of the original Marathon when I picked up a Quad-Speed CD-ROM drive for my LC and they threw in a free demo disc of hundreds of games, apps and utilities. While it was only 3 single player levels, and one multiplayer map it kept me entertained until the demo of Marathon 2 came along, again 3 single player and one multiplayer map, but this time... I had met some friends that had Mac's as well, and we had a many game playing all the multiplayer styles in Marathon 2.

But Marathon is a story for another time.

Also, this ends the story of my first Mac... I still have that Mac, and a few times a year I turn it on just for kicks. It still kicks along, and it's never had a problem that I hadn't caused.

Ahhh memories man!!!

I remember those days, the first computer we had at home was an apple IIc in mid '92, it certainly wasn't the latest or greatest - it didn't even have a hard drive, or mouse & it booted off 5 inch floppies. Games consisted of Space Quarks (space invaders-like), Black Jack, Lemonade Stand.

Although i did discover one day you could press some of the buttons you pressed to reset the computer and it would stop some of the programs we had, then you could type 'list' and get a list of their program code - that is when i first got into programming Wide grin

Eventually we got a game called Prince of Persia, man that was REVOLUTIONARY!!!! That game is so cool i still play the original to this day!! That game and Transylvania were the first games to transport me to the actual game-world of feeling scared and jumping & such in response to the game & environment (event though it only had a tiny green&black monitor).

But my friend DID have an LC model around that era, an LCIII oh i used to L O V E playing on that thing! On the development side of things he had a cool program called microworlds, which was the the latest (at the time) program from those Logo Writer people with the turtle. He also had Spectre, man that was a cool game, sweet sounds, 3d graphics (for that time) were smooth, I also used to go into the computer shop to play it that game. He also had some others Scarab of Ra, ShufflePuck i think it was called, and another one, shufflePuck cafe.

Years later we got a Performa, and finally i could run those games at home, i traded games with friends and came into touch with F/A-18 Hornet, i remember some nights after school a friend and i would go to his parent's work to play on the macs on their work network. We'd play flight sims, and also Avara.

Later again a friend gave me a copy of marathon, and a whole new era began...

*sigh*

ahh....getting me all nostelgic
