Sent this to The Big Issue

Submitted by burto on October 2, 2008 - 7:46pm.

Waiting to cross the street, in the chaos that is school holidays, I was a little lost in a new city and late for an appointment.

Just a few metres to my left there was a gentlemen selling copies of The Big Issue. Not just quietly offering it to people as they approach, but cheerfully entertaining and addressing the whole crowd as they wait. While curious, I avoided eye contact as I couldn’t afford the delay. The light went green and I crossed the street, eventually relieved once finding my destination.

Originally from Sydney, I’ve heard of The Big Issue and noticed it being sold in the CBD, but never felt compelled to buy a copy, unaware until now, of the circumstances people selling TBI are facing, or the positive impact the publication has.

People often feel uncomfortable when someone tries to sell them something. On approach they prepare by arming themselves with a defensive “No”, or semi-polite “No Thanks”, moving on quickly without thought, subconsciously hoping for it to be as quick and painless as a speedy band-aid removal. Such evasion may be driven by avoidance of that guilty feeling which may surface after disappointing the seller, and adding to their mental losing streak.

It’s easy to say no to someone who already has a defeated look on their face, yet I’ve never before observed the drive and determination of this gentleman, after being both impressed and entertained by his delivery and perseverance I’m convinced he would succeed in any sales position. I wish I had such successful qualities.

After my appointment, I returned and bought TBI with no prior knowledge of its content, but simply to reward a top effort… The crowd seemed to slightly part as I approached with a smile and money in hand, I complemented his skill and enthusiasm and hopefully brightened his day. I wasn’t buying a magazine, I was buying a smile, and boosting his sense of achievement.

I admire the courage of all vendors..

Wishing I could be more help,

I find headphones are a good

I find headphones are a good way to avoid street vendors. They're reluctant to ask you if they think you can't hear them.

Nice write up man, but for

Nice write up man, but for those of you who don't know, part of the profit goes to the sellors of TBI as most of them are homeless. For this very reason alone I'd buy it...I never have, but maybe I will sometime in the future.

Still could make it in to the next issue. You'll just have to keep buying them to find out.
