Today Australia swore in it's first female Governor General. Several of our news networks here have been making a some-what big deal out of this. I even believe it was an election promise of Kevin Rudd to do so.

I, on the other hand, could not give a shit.

Regardless of who got the job, the position is completely redundant. Just another useless government position that receives an income from Australian tax dollars. Just so someone can sit around doing next to nothing under the guise of the "Queen's representative".

There's a "Governors Role" section of the site - unfortunately it's all as vague as a politician talking about health care.

Of course, maybe I'm looking at this wrong. It must be a difficult job entertaining visiting Heads of State, sitting around waiting for Parliament to loose faith in the Prime Minister, or even attending military parades. Now that's a hard day's work. Even the Governor General's own site can't make the role seem important.

Though, I suppose I wouldn't be complaining about this bogus job if I had it.
