Random Ramblings

Back in the 90s Chris Cornell fronted Sound Garden and a great sound was created. In the 00's he fronted Audioslave and, well... Their first album was a great sound. In 2007, Chris Cornell has gone solo... And is the open act for Linkin Park. How the mighty have fallen.

My choc-chip ice cream is lacking in choc-chips. I feel ripped off.

Recently I've considered getting a MacBook. While I'm not about to rush out and bust the shrink wrap off one, the idea has fluttered into my head on ore than a few occasions. I find this odd, since I really don't have a need for a laptop. I don't really go anywhere where I've needed a laptop and apart from the ability to geek-out when in someone's living room or be able to use the WIFI to access the Internet by the pool - I don't need one.

Yet, I still sometimes think of getting one. When the idea first came to mind I thought the best way to get one was to save money on a second hand one. The problem with this is that I don't trust ebay for large transactions.

I already have the big,

I already have the big, fancy, power real computer with plenty of potential storage capacity.

A portable would only be for viewing of photos taken when not at home, and things of that nature. Of course, since I can't really think of any more than a couple of reasons to have one it just brings home that it's a really bad idea.

That link exists because it's mentioned in the latest How I Met Your Mother episode and I want to keep it here so I don't forget it.

Audioslave (or RATM for that

Audioslave (or RATM for that matter) was never good, and Linkin Park in recent years... :P but tastes aside

A fair few ppl I know either have Macbooks, or want one. Everyone who's got one has been really happy with it, especially so if they bought a Macbook Pro.

If you want to save a few hundred dollars, Apple sell refurbished ones with warranty through their web store, and keep an eye out around your local universities and such for equipment, either professional or personal, being sold.

I'd be hesitant about buying one sight-unseen second hand (such as via postage on eBay), but something like the newspaper or online classifieds where you can "try before you buy".

And you can always goto Myer and play around with the demo models, if you want to see how things work ;)

I also have the issue of wanting a laptop, just for cool factor or occasional use, want something cool, but don't want to drop $1500 (or $3000) on a MB or MBP.

You could get a fancy cheap UMPC, like the upcoming Asus EEE, which is actually what I hope to do if they're reasonably priced (AU$500-600), and the OLPC project just went public for US$400 as well.

Alot of manufacturers are also offering really nice laptops for quite low prices these days. Personally, I'd stay away from the cheap HP, Acer, etc offerings, but the Dells you can get for AU$700-900 are amazing value.

Dunno how you'd go running OSX on one of them (fairly x86 new hardware has limited/no driver support), but you can theme Linux up to look fairly OSX-ish. For GNOME, the T-ish control and border theme, OSX icons, and Avant Window Nagivator can give you an attractive and useable desktop.

God I sound like a salesman :P I personally prefer something I can cheaply run Ubuntu on, and usually like cheap underdog systems I have to hack a bit to get working how I want, but have no particular Macfag/Winfag/Linfag hate for other sytems. I just like good quality products.

Wow... Now that's a reply

Wow... Now that's a reply and a half.

Apple does have refurb MacBooks listed at the moment, $1380 for a nice one. Even so, that's $1300 for a device I really don't need - except to increase my geek status.

And I would prefer a MacBook, or Even MacBook Pro so I could use the same apps and share content between them. For instance, iPhoto.

I'm sure OSX could be hacked around with to get it working on a non-Apple portable, but I'd always be living in fear that the next update would break it and I like to be up to date. ::patiently waits to pre-order 10.5 :)::
